Description
This course explores race-based trauma—its causes, its effects, and its profound impact on students’ well-being and learning. Educators will examine how racism, discrimination, and systemic inequities contribute to racialized stress and trauma, and how these experiences shape students’ physical, emotional, and academic outcomes. Through research-based strategies and reflective practice, participants will learn how to recognize race-based trauma, respond with culturally affirming support, and create healing-centered environments where all students feel seen, valued, and safe.
Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify how racial bias, discrimination, and other acts rooted in individual and systemic racism traumatize students of color and contribute to adversity and stress
- Define race-based trauma and understand its key components
- Explain how race-based trauma affects students’ physical and mental health
- Apply strategies to disrupt harmful systems and build healing-centered, culturally responsive learning environments
