Description

In this course, educators will deepen their understanding of the unique challenges faced by transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming students in school settings. Learners will explore key LGBTQ+ terminology, examine the various ways students may transition and share their identities, and assess your own classroom and school environment for inclusivity and affirmation. Through research, reflection, and intentional planning, you will develop concrete action steps to create safer, more supportive spaces for all students. By completing this course, you will be equipped to use inclusive language, challenge bias and discrimination, and serve as a visible ally for transgender and gender-nonconforming students in your learning community.

Objectives

In this course, you will learn to:

  • Define and explain various terms related to the queer of “LGBTQ+” identities
  • Explain how transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming (also called GNC) students may choose to transition and make their identity public
  • Explain the specific challenges and needs of BIPOC students (Black, Indigenous & People of Color) who are transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming 
  • Identify effective action steps to create safer learning spaces for transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming students

This course exposed me to some eye opening statistics concerning the LGBTQ+student experiences in the school setting. It also gave good advice on how to become more inclusive of all learners. This was an awesome learning experience. I plan on looking into doing more blended learning courses soon.
