Description
Secondary trauma does not occur in isolation—and neither does the solution. While individual practices such as self-care, mindfulness, and other healing strategies are essential, sustainable well-being requires school systems that intentionally cultivate a culture of care and support for all educators. In this facilitated course, participants will examine the causes and impacts of secondary trauma (also known as compassion fatigue) and explore how it affects their work with students. Educators will develop healing-centered practices that promote resilience, balance, and professional sustainability within a supportive school community.
Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Define trauma and explain its prevalence among students in school
- Identify the causes and implications of secondary trauma (compassion fatigue) for educators
- Create and apply healing-centered, personal self-care practices to address the effects of secondary traumatic stress
- Develop a list of accessible resources and supports to help address compassion fatigue
