SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING
Self-Awareness
In our schools, educators are not only required to understand their attitudes and opinions but also are expected to recognize the limitations of self and how different self-aspects influence their teaching. Socially and emotionally, educators understand that their behaviors are influenced by multiple personal factors, such as their background experiences, personality, emotions, knowledge base, opinions, and attitudes. They are also aware that equally distinct personal factors influence their students’ behaviors and that they must bridge differences with their students to build strong interpersonal relations and engage students in learning.
The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) has identified five competencies crucial to effective social and emotional learning for children and adults. Self-awareness is one of those competencies, and this course will guide educators through personal self-examination.
Objectives
Course Objectives:
- Identify and assess your emotions, thoughts, behaviors, values, and ability to access your goals, strengths, and challenges. Then you will learn how to empower yourself with confidence, optimism, and sources of motivation.
- Look deeply at yourself and build on an awareness of your own personal identity (values, beliefs, cultural norms, implicit biases, etc.) and how that identity can reflect a mindset that suspends judgment and is culturally responsive.
- Reflect on your current social and emotional skills, so you know areas where you may want to improve. This requires you to get away from distractions and take time to reflect deeply and honestly on your strengths and weaknesses.
