Three main laws are largely responsible for impacting the education of students and staff with disabilities in today’s climate: Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). In this course, you will learn more about each of these laws and how they serve different purposes within the educational setting.
Objectives
Course participants will:
Identify the primary protections and requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) for individuals with disabilities;
Differentiate between the provisions and eligibility criteria of 504 Plans and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), including their development, implementation, and review processes;
Analyze the impact of disproportionality in special education, including overrepresentation and under-identification of culturally and linguistically diverse students, and propose strategies for equitable identification and support; and
Develop action plans to apply ADA, Section 504, and IDEA guidelines effectively within educational settings, ensuring compliance and fostering inclusive environments for students with disabilities.
