This introductory course empowers educators to strengthen inclusive practices by providing fundamental information about special education, including pivotal legislation, essential acronyms, and inclusive language etiquette.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, learners will gain foundational knowledge for strengthening inclusive practices for educators working with students with disabilities.
Participants will explore and articulate the core principles, rights, and responsibilities outlined in key special education legislation, including IDEA, Section 504, and ADA, understanding their civil rights implications.
Learners will also differentiate among the 13 IDEA disability categories and their impact on educational eligibility and planning.
Emphasis is placed on recognizing and mitigating ableism through inclusive language and practices. Furthermore, participants will apply LRE and inclusion principles to support equitable education for students with disabilities, and explore the IEP process, advocating for appropriate supports and accommodations.
Differentiating between IEPs and 504 plans, the course highlights the flexibility of 504 plans in providing accommodations to students who may not qualify for an IEP but still require support. Throughout the course, learners are prompted to reflect on their current knowledge and practices, identify gaps, and set personal learning goals to enhance their ability to create inclusive educational environments.
